HERITAGE – CONSERVING PERTH’S PAST, ENRICHING THE FUTURE

Cowle Street and Dorrien Gardens have a rich history. This area of Perth was originally a series of wetlands, and Dorrien Gardens was part of Lake Henderson. It was known as Boojormelup by the Nyoongar people.

In the 1870s Lake Henderson was drained and settlers established market gardens there. The first house was constructed in Cowle Street in 1884.

In the 1920s much of the reclaimed lake ceased to be used for market gardening and became a recreational reserve named Dorrien Gardens in honour of British General Sir Horace Lockwood Smith-Dorrien.

In the 1950s Dorrien Gardens was developed into a soccer ground and today is the home of the Perth Soccer Club, traditionally supported by the local Italian community.

Two significant early semi-detached houses in Cowle Street, built in 1891 in the late Colonial Georgian style, still stand on the site. These have been restored and adapted as modern residences within the Dorrien Apartments complex, connecting elements of Perth’s past with its future.
