This month marks the conclusion of my term on the UDIA WA Council, which in turn has seen me step down from my position on the UDIA National Board and as National Vice President.
It’s hard to believe that nearly seven years have passed since I first joined the UDIA WA Council and three years since joining the National Board.
I’m certainly proud of the contribution I’ve made, whilst also a little disappointed that, at such a significant time for our industry, I couldn’t have done more. Perhaps that’s a good indication that it’s time to step aside and allow others to bring fresh energy and perspectives to the table.
Whilst I may no longer be attending board meetings, I remain as energised as ever to support UDIA and its important work advocating for our members, who continue to work tirelessly to deliver more of the homes our communities so desperately need, faster.
Before deciding to take on the role of UDIA WA President, a very wise, slightly older statesman said to me over coffee, “It will be hard work, but immensely satisfying, and you will get back way more than you can ever contribute.”
I’ve always believed that you should never put your hand up for a volunteer role with the expectation of getting something in return. However, looking back now, I couldn’t agree more with his words.
The knowledge I’ve gained, the people I’ve met, the experiences I’ve had and the connections I’ve made are things I will cherish forever. They have enriched me both personally and professionally and reinforced my commitment to continue contributing, in whatever way I can, to the betterment of our industry.
I’ve also been fortunate to serve alongside some incredibly talented and passionate people, both my fellow Council and Board members who give so generously of their time, and the dedicated UDIA staff at both State and National level whose commitment and hard work make such an important difference to our industry. I leave with the utmost respect and appreciation for all they do.
Of course, people have already started asking what I’m going to do with all this newfound free time on my hands.
Well, I haven’t quite decided yet!
My business partners and all our wonderful staff at Celsius have been incredibly supportive of my volunteer endeavours over the years, ensuring our organisation has continued to go from strength to strength while I’ve devoted time and energy to UDIA. For that, I’m enormously grateful.
So, for now, I think I’ll hang on to those hours, invest a few more in our family and perhaps even keep a little time for myself.
All the best,
Richard
