Park Terraces Shenton Park secures UDIA National Small Scale Development Award

We are incredibly proud and humbled to have received the UDIA National “Small Scale Development” Award competing against the very best small scale developments across the country. The calibre of entries in the National Awards across the various categories shows how committed we are as an industry in achieving outstanding outcomes and credit to UDIA who ensure a spotlight is shone on not just large projects but small ones too. Housing choice has never been more important across Australia with the vast array of housing needs to suit our varied lifestyles and stages of life.

The UDIA National Judges were highly impressed with the quality of the internal finishes, generous volume and liveability of the project. A strong focus on sustainability within a small scale setting raises the bar for others nationally.

Park Terraces delivers a unique housing model to the newly established Montario Quarter in Shenton Park. The development consists of 12 architecturally designed terrace homes linked by a private communal garden that creates a sense of community between its residents.

When the design was conceived for Park Terraces, Celsius aimed to create a striking aesthetic that would stand out from the crowd but still be sympathetic to the heritage of the location. To achieve this outcome, the base of the building has been constructed with recycled bricks laid with various patterns and spacings to add further texture and interest to the street elevation. Contrasting the heritage feel of the reclaimed brickwork, the upper floors have been clad in a sleek black max-line Colorbond system with striking two storey hoods creating a dramatic design feature above the level one balconies.

From inside the terraces this double height void is showcased in the stairwells from the upper floors and combined with full height glazing on each level this creates an abundance of light to the living areas and master bedrooms.

The outcome is an elegant blend of contemporary architecture amongst the established residences of Shenton Park.

Creating a sense of community within the development was a key focus in the design. The unique shape of the site provided an opportunity to introduce a private communal garden into the centre of the site situated above an undercroft carpark. This shared green space creates an ideal environment for residents to interact with their neighbours with features such as a communal entertaining deck, herb garden and large citrus trees. Eleven of the 12 dwellings have direct access into the central communal garden to encourage its use and enhance the sense of community for residents. The terrace houses were also designed to step down towards the central communal garden to maximize solar access.

Sustainability is a key focus of Montario Quarter and this is eviden

ced by the fact it is the first urban infill development in Western Australia to achieve the 6-Star rating from the Green Building Council of Australia. Development WA sets minimum sustainability requirements for all development within Montario Quarter.  Park Terraces exceeds those minimum requirements with some notable features being north-south orientation of the terraces, an average NatHERS rating of 7.5 stars, individual solar panels provided for each terrace, electric vehicle charging infrastructure and the use of authentic reclaimed bricks.

Whilst we take a moment to reflect on the recognition this award provides our team, architect, builder and numerous other consultants there is plenty of work to do in providing much needed housing choice and supply throughout Perth in a very challenging environment. At Celsius we remain entirely focused on securing approvals for projects of a high standard that are capable of being developed in the current economic climate, which we feel ultimately assists Perth maintain its affordable edge over the rest of Australia.

All the best,

Richard
